Oct 10 Gabriel Gathering and Historic Marker Unveiling, Oct 12 Black Cemetery Group Convening
22nd Annual Gabriel Gathering: Reclaiming Black Cemeteries - Reclaiming Resistance!
Twenty years ago, on Oct. 10, 2004, the Sacred Ground Historical Reclamation Project of the Virginia Defenders for Freedom, Justice & Equality hosted a symposium on Gabriel's Rebellion and the "Burial Ground for Negroes," followed by the unveiling of the first state historical marker in the City of Richmond honoring the great slave rebellion leader Gabriel and, for the first time, officially marking the site of the Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground. This Oct. 10 we will honor Richmond's historic Black cemeteries and unveil the second state historic marker, titled "Richmond’s First Municipal African Cemetery."
Please join us at 6:30 pm that Thursday evening, and bring a flower to pay homage to those buried in this long invisible burial place and to the memory of all that Gabriel and his friends and comrades sought to do.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED.
PLEASE CHECK BACK SOON FOR A NEW DATE AND UPDATED FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE
Through presentations, short films and discussion, we will explore our various methods for claiming and asserting the right to protect and preserve historic Black cemeteries as well as examining past acts of resistance. We firmly believe that this work is no less an act of resistance against the dehumanization of a people than an insurrection against the institution of slavery. Our purpose is to provide a space for sharing the specific challenges still facing the sites we represent and advocate for, and our experiences finding solutions. Please join us!Details & Registraton will be updated soon.
