October 10, 2014 is the 10th anniversary of the installation of the Gabriel historic marker at 15th & E. Broad streets in Shockoe Bottom, Richmond's founding city center. October 10, 2014 is also the 2014th anniversary of the martyrdom of Gabriel, leader of the August 30th Slavery Insurrection of 1800, executed on this site.
Join us for a Sunset Ceremony on the site of Richmond African Burial Ground to begin at 6:00 pm promptly.
Special Guests: Members of a delegation from the West African Republic of MALI, including the Governor of the Region of Segou and the Mayor of the city of Segou.
Presentations will continue through the setting of the sun and the lighting of torches. Feel free to bring your own small lamps or flash lights. Please bring real or handmade flowers to leave on the ground.
